Marie grows up in an Irish-American Brooklyn between the wars, is jilted, marries someone else, raises children and grows old, and McDermott declines to give her a single dramatic event to justify the attention. The novel moves back and forth across her life in short scenes, and the argument, made entirely through craft, is that an unremarkable life will hold as much as you are willing to look at.
