Tobias Wolff and his mother drive west to escape one bad man and arrive at another, a stepfather in a Washington logging town who sets about grinding him down. The boy responds by inventing himself on paper, forging school transcripts and recommendation letters. Wolff writes his younger self with no self-pity and considerable suspicion, and the memoir became the template for a generation of them.
