Where I’m Calling From

Selected Stories

Raymond Carver · 1988

The stories that taught a generation of writers how much can be left out.

Carver selected these stories himself, drawing from three earlier collections plus seven new pieces, shortly before his death in 1988. They are about people just above or just below the waterline: waitresses, salesmen, the recently laid off, the recently sober. The prose withholds so much that readers argued for years about how much Gordon Lish’s editing had shaped it.

I am certainly not the only MFA grad who has Raymond Carver to thank (or blame) for pursuing short-story writing as a vocation. When this collection landed in my hands, I was not only taken by the stories but also inspired to try my hand at this thing he made look so easy.
