Cover of Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler

Farewell, My Lovely

Raymond Chandler · 1940

Marlowe takes a missing-persons job for an ex-convict the size of a door, and it never gets simpler.

Marlowe is looking for a barber when Moose Malloy, just out of prison and roughly the size of a wardrobe, pulls him into the search for a girlfriend who has not been seen in eight years. Chandler folds in a second case and lets the two collapse into each other, and the plot matters less than the voice, which the genre has been imitating ever since.
