Sam Spade’s partner is shot the night a woman walks into their office with a false name and a false story, and the next few days bring a fat man, a gunsel and a jewelled falcon that half of Europe has been chasing for four hundred years. Hammett had worked as a Pinkerton operative and wrote the detective as a professional rather than a hero, which is the whole innovation.
