Raman paints signs for a living in Narayan’s fictional town of Malgudi, content with an ordered life, until Daisy arrives to promote family planning across the district and unsettles everything he assumed about himself. Published in 1976 against the backdrop of India’s sterilisation campaigns, it is lighter in touch than that suggests and quietly serious about what modernity asks of people.
