A Bangalore family moves from cramped poverty to sudden wealth on the back of an uncle’s spice business, and the narrator watches the household’s moral sense quietly dissolve as the money arrives. Shanbhag wrote it in Kannada; the title is a nonsense phrase from a family’s private vocabulary meaning tangled beyond repair. It runs to barely a hundred pages.
