How AIDS Activists Used Art to Fight a Pandemic

Jack Lowery · 2022

The artists of Gran Fury turned ACT UP's rage into posters a city could not ignore.

Gran Fury was the art collective that came out of ACT UP and produced the images that defined AIDS activism: the SILENCE=DEATH pink triangle, the kissing couples on New York buses, the bus shelter reading KISSING DOESN’T KILL. Lowery draws on interviews and the group’s archives to show how a handful of designers and artists built a visual language urgent enough to force a public health emergency into view.
