Three unrelated cold cases in Cambridge, a missing child, a murdered girl, a woman who took an axe to her husband, land on the desk of Jackson Brodie, a former policeman working as a private investigator while his own life comes apart. Atkinson had written literary fiction and treated the crime novel as a form worth taking seriously, which is roughly what happened to the genre afterwards.
