Erdrich’s first novel opens with June Kashpaw walking into a snowstorm and works outward across fifty years and two Ojibwe families on and around a North Dakota reservation, handing the narration between more than a dozen voices. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1984 and began the interconnected cycle she has been writing ever since.
