Written partly in prison by a man who went back to Russia knowing what waited.
Alexei Navalny began this memoir after being poisoned with Novichok in 2020 and continued it in prison, and the tonal shift between the two halves is the book. He returned to Russia in 2021 knowing what would happen, was sentenced to nineteen years, and kept writing in a penal colony above the Arctic Circle until his death in February 2024. It is funnier than it has any right to be.

After he was poisoned in 2020 and evacuated to Germany for treatment, Navalny returned to Russia knowing that prison was likely and death possible. The opposition activist continued to defy Russian President Vladimir Putin anyway.
