Cruel Optimism
Why people stay attached to the very things that are wearing them out.
Lauren Berlant’s term describes an attachment to something that actively obstructs the flourishing it seems to promise: a job, a diet, a national ideal, a relationship. Drawing on film, literature and art from the 1990s onward, they argue that the postwar promise of the good life persists as a fantasy precisely as its material conditions disappear. It became one of the most cited works in cultural theory of its decade.

This book changed my life when I first encountered it in graduate school. It made me believe that there was someone else in the world who thought the way I did.
