In 1961 the Berlin Wall went up overnight and cut a city in half. Joachim Rudolph, who had already escaped once, went back under it, joining students who spent months digging a tunnel from a derelict West Berlin factory to a cellar in the East. Merriman built the book from interviews and Stasi files, and the files reveal what the diggers did not know at the time: the operation had been penetrated almost from the start.
