Gary Gilmore was executed by firing squad in Utah in 1977, the first person put to death in America after the death penalty was reinstated. His youngest brother Mikal, a music journalist, went back through four generations of the family: a violent father, a Mormon mother who left the church, the beatings, the institutions. It is a memoir about inheritance written by the only brother who got out, and it does not claim that as a virtue.
