The Little Drummer Girl

John le CarrĂ© · 1983

An actress is recruited to play a part for Israeli intelligence, and stops knowing where the role ends.

Charlie, a young English actress with vaguely radical politics, is recruited by Israeli intelligence to play a role in an operation against a Palestinian bomber, and finds the part written for her requires believing it. Le Carre published it in 1983 after reporting in Lebanon and Israel, and it was controversial for giving the Palestinian side an argument. It is his most sustained book about performance as a form of espionage.
