Cover of Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein

Starship Troopers

Robert A. Heinlein · 1959

Powered armour and interstellar war, wrapped around an argument about who has earned the vote.

Juan Rico enlists in the Mobile Infantry and fights an interstellar war in powered armour, while the novel argues, in classroom scenes as much as combat, that the franchise should be earned through federal service. Heinlein wrote it in 1959 in weeks, and it has been read ever since as both a defence of military virtue and a satire of it. It remains on professional military reading lists.
