Trampoline

An Illustrated Novel

Robert Gipe · 2015

A teenage girl in coal-country Kentucky, drawn as well as written, watching the mountain go.

Dawn Jewell is fifteen in a Kentucky coal town where her grandmother is fighting mountaintop removal, her mother is using, and her uncle is dangerous. Gipe, who ran a community college theatre programme in Harlan County, tells it in her voice and illustrates it with his own drawings of her, so the book looks like something she made. It is very funny and the funniness is what makes the rest bearable.

Through people who are as hilarious as their situations are dire, this illustrated novel by the bard of Appalachia makes you feel for those whose lands and bodies were exploited by corporations out to make a buck.
