The Undertow
Scenes from a Slow Civil War
A reporter drives through the American right and finds grief where he expected rage.
Jeff Sharlet travelled the United States between 2016 and 2022, sitting with Trump rally-goers, prosperity preachers, militia members and the family of a man shot dead by police, and writing what people actually said rather than what a thesis required. The result is less an explanation than a portrait of grief curdling into something else, and Sharlet is honest that he does not stand outside it.
