On a medieval island, a wolf-child and an atheist become the same theological experiment.
On an imaginary Mediterranean island in the fifteenth century, two events coincide: a child raised by wolves is found in the hills, and an atheist washes ashore. The cardinal decides the wolf-child can settle whether knowledge of God is innate, and the atheist can be argued into belief or tortured into it. Paton Walsh published it herself after rejections and it was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1994. It is a philosophical novel that never stops being a story.
