Fitzgerald died before finishing it, leaving the best portrait anyone wrote of a studio boss at work.
Monroe Stahr runs a studio the way Irving Thalberg ran MGM, making a hundred small decisions a day about scripts, actors and money, and Fitzgerald renders that work with an accuracy no other novelist has matched. He died in 1940 with the book roughly half written, and it was assembled from his drafts and notes by Edmund Wilson. It is unfinished in the plainest sense, and still the best account of what running a studio actually involved.
