An orphan sent to her grandfather in the Alps, and the homesickness that nearly kills her in the city.
Orphaned Heidi is deposited on her grandfather, a recluse living above the village of Dorfli in the Swiss Alps, and thaws him without meaning to. Then she is taken to Frankfurt as a companion for an invalid girl and nearly dies of homesickness. Spyri published it in 1881 and it has never been out of print, largely because the mountain is not scenery in it: the book takes seriously the idea that a place can be necessary to a person.
