Desert Solitaire

Edward Abbey spent three seasons as a park ranger at Arches in Utah, and wrote this account of the desert and of what he saw coming for it. The nature writing is exact and often beautiful; the polemic against roads, tourists and industrial recreation is furious and has aged into prophecy. He is not always likeable and does not try to be, which is part of why the book has outlasted more agreeable ones.
