A failed newspaperman takes his daughters to Newfoundland and slowly stops apologising for existing.
Quoyle is a third-rate newspaperman whose wife dies badly, leaving him with two daughters and nothing to stay in New York for. He takes them to his family’s abandoned house in Newfoundland and starts writing the shipping news for a local paper. Proulx writes the weather and the boats with the same clipped attention she gives the people, and the novel won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.
