A Derbyshire village quarantines itself against the plague, and a housemaid becomes its unlikely healer.
In 1666 the Derbyshire village of Eyam, having received plague in a bolt of cloth from London, chose to quarantine itself rather than carry the infection outward. Brooks tells it through Anna Frith, a young housemaid who becomes a healer as the clergy and the gentry fail around her. The village and its decision are historical; Anna is not, and the novel is most interesting on what communal virtue costs the individuals inside it.
