The Evolution of Everything

Matt Ridley argues that the important things about human life were not designed by anyone: morality, money, language, technology and the economy all emerged from the bottom up, through selection and accumulation, while the people credited with inventing them were mostly along for the ride. He extends Darwin’s logic well past biology and is deliberately provocative about what governments can and cannot plan. The argument is contestable throughout, which is rather the point.
