Percival Everett retells Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the point of view of the man Twain called Jim, beginning with the discovery that he and every other enslaved person has been performing the dialect white people expect. Away from them they speak plainly, teach their children to code-switch, and read stolen philosophy. The novel keeps Twain’s river and inverts everything else, and it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2025.
