The Sun Also Rises
Expatriates drift from Paris cafes to Pamplona bullrings, all of them wounded in ways nobody will name.
Jake Barnes, a journalist left impotent by a war wound, follows a circle of expatriates from the cafes of Paris to the bullfights at Pamplona, all of them orbiting Lady Brett Ashley and none of them able to say what they want. Hemingway’s first novel established the prose that would define him, plain sentences carrying everything they refuse to state, and gave the Lost Generation both its portrait and, by way of Gertrude Stein’s remark in the epigraph, its name.

It's fashionable these days not to like Ernest Hemingway, especially for his misogyny, but he also wrote scathingly about men's treatment of women. Lady Brett Ashley is one of the great female characters in literature.
