A small-time Boston gunrunner tries to talk his way out of prison, in a novel told almost entirely in dialogue.
Eddie Coyle sells guns to bank robbers around Boston and is facing a prison sentence he would rather avoid, which leaves him deciding who to inform on. Higgins was a federal prosecutor and wrote almost the entire novel as overheard dialogue, and the result changed how American crime fiction sounds.

If this is the hardest of hard-boiled crime stories, it's also one of the most unexpectedly moving. Higgins had a Dickensian eye and ear for the world he made his own, Boston's seedy criminal underworld, and its denizens become tragic figures in his hands, none more so than the aging gun dealer Eddie Coyle.
