Kristin Hannah is an American novelist who practised law before turning to fiction and has since written more than twenty books. The Nightingale, about two sisters in occupied France, became an enormous bestseller, as did The Women, which follows an army nurse through Vietnam and home again to a country that would rather not hear about it. She writes about women placed at the centre of histories usually told about men.
