His book 1913: The Year Before the Storm reconstructs the last full year before the First World War month by month, through the artists, writers and thinkers living through it without knowing what came next, and became an international bestseller. The Magic of Silence turns the same method on the painter Caspar David Friedrich. He has worked as an art critic and newspaper editor in Germany.
