The Making of the Modern Philippines: Pieces of a Jigsaw State

Philip Bowring

Why a country with real advantages has stayed poorer than its neighbours for a long time.

Philip Bowring surveys Philippine history, geography, demography and politics, and asks why growth has persistently lagged the rest of Southeast Asia despite considerable natural and human resources. Low productivity is the recurring theme. A good example of the explanatory, country-specific book that is harder to find than it should be.

Philip Bowring, The Making of the Modern Philippines: Pieces of a Jigsaw State is a good overview and in general I favor explanatory, country-specific books. Once again, low productivity in agriculture is a big problem.
