Schoenberg: Why He Matters

Harvey Sachs makes the case for the composer who broke tonality, sets him inside the Vienna that produced him, and is candid that a considerable portion of the output is hard going even for sympathetic listeners. Short, and better than most introductions precisely because it does not oversell.

Harvey Sachs, Schoenberg: Why He Matters. A very good introduction to a composer who truly matters. Also a good (short) portrait of Vienna at that time. It also admits that a lot of his work wasn’t that good, and helps you separate the better from the worse.
