Cull of the Wild: Killing in the Name of Conservation
Saving one species usually means killing another, and conservation rarely admits how routine that is.
Hugh Warwick works through the culls that conservation depends on: grey squirrels, hedgehog predators, invasive species on islands, deer. He is sympathetic to the ecologists doing the killing and to the people appalled by it, and does not resolve the tension so much as show how unavoidable it is once you decide some landscapes are worth restoring.
