The Struggle for Taiwan: A History of America, China, and the Island Caught Between

Sulmaan Wasif Khan

Taiwan told as a triangle, with the island itself given as much agency as Washington or Beijing.

Sulmaan Wasif Khan traces the relationship between the United States, China and Taiwan from the mid-twentieth century to the present, treating Taiwanese leaders as actors rather than as the object of a great-power argument. A solid narrative account, though readers who have followed the dispute closely may find little that is new.

Sulmaan Wasif Khan, The Struggle for Taiwan: A History of America, China, and the Island Caught Between. I’ve been following this issue for a long time, so I don’t feel I learned much from this book. But for most people, especially younger people, it is a very good introduction to the longer history.
