Brandy Schillace reconstructs the lives of transgender people in Weimar Berlin who passed through Magnus Hirschfeld’s institute, drawing on case files, letters and the fragments that survived the book burnings. It shares its subject with the Hirschfeld biographies, but is told from the side of the patients rather than the physician who treated them.
