The Einstein of Sex: Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld Visionary of Weimar Berlin
Magnus Hirschfeld built the world's first institute for sexual science, and the Nazis burned it.
Daniel Brook tells the story of the Weimar physician who founded the Institut fur Sexualwissenschaft in Berlin, campaigned against the law criminalising homosexuality, and issued some of the earliest documents recognising transgender patients. The institute’s library was among the first things the Nazis destroyed in 1933. Hirschfeld died in exile two years later.
