Phineas Finn

Anthony Trollope

A young Irishman with no money enters Parliament and finds out what keeping a seat actually costs.

The second of Trollope’s Palliser novels follows Phineas Finn from Dublin into the Commons, where he does well enough to matter and discovers that principle and advancement point in different directions. It is a novel about political life more than about any single plot, parliamentary detail included down to currency decimalisation, and Trollope is very good on the women around him.

Tyler Cowen

Anthony Trollope, Phineas Finn. One of the best Trollope novels it seems, even though it is not (yet?) clear what the plot actually consists of. Currency decimalization is also one of the side plots, who can argue with that?
