Carthage: A New History

Eve MacDonald

Rome destroyed Carthage and then wrote its history. This is the attempt to recover the rest.

Eve MacDonald assembles what can be known of Carthage from archaeology and from sources that are almost entirely hostile, covering the city’s Phoenician origins, its trading empire, its religion and the wars that ended it. She is honest about how thin the evidence remains at the conceptual level, which is itself one of the book’s better problems.

Eve MacDonald, Carthage: A New History covers what we do know about those people. That isn’t much at the conceptual level, and I wonder why archaeology has not taught us more there.
