Portrait of C. G. Jung

C. G. Jung

Psychiatrist

C. G. Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist who founded analytical psychology after breaking with Freud over how much of the mind is personal and how much inherited. He proposed the collective unconscious and the archetypes, and introduced terms that have since escaped into ordinary speech, among them introversion, extraversion and the complex. His later work drew on alchemy, myth and religion, which is why he is read as often by writers as by clinicians.
