Portrait of Audre Lorde

Author

Audre Lorde

Poet & Essayist

Audre Lorde was an American poet and essayist who described herself as black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet, and who insisted those identities could not be separated for anyone’s convenience. Sister Outsider collects the essays that shaped later thinking about difference and coalition, and The Cancer Journals turned her own illness into a public argument about silence. She wrote that the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.
