Poet
Mary Oliver was an American poet who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and the National Book Award in 1992, and who by 2007 was the best-selling poet in the United States. She wrote out of long solitary walks, and her poems keep to plain language and close attention: a grasshopper, a pond, a morning. That directness is why she is quoted at funerals and weddings more than almost any modern poet, and why critics underrated her for years.
