bell hooks was the pen name of Gloria Jean Watkins, an American writer, educator and social critic who published nearly forty books on race, feminism, class and love. She wrote deliberately in plain language, arguing that theory which cannot be read by the people it concerns has failed at its job, and her work on how race, capitalism and gender compound each other became foundational to intersectional thinking. She taught at Berea College in Kentucky.
