Necessary Illusions

Chomsky’s 1988 Massey Lectures, arguing that where a state cannot compel belief it must manufacture consent instead, and that a nominally free press is the main instrument. He works through coverage of Central America, the Middle East and domestic dissent to show how the range of acceptable opinion gets settled before any debate begins. The examples have dated; the mechanism has not.
