Seguin traces how Marias, Cercas and others wrote democracy into being through two forms at once, publishing novels and newspaper columns in parallel and letting each shape the other. The argument makes most sense to readers who already know the fiction, and raises the obvious question of why the same correlation never took hold in America.

I liked this book very much, as it gave me extremely useful background on the Spanish fiction I enjoy. It may make less sense to read if you don’t already know the relevant fiction, but in any case a fine work.
