Mysticism and Dissent: Socioreligious Dissent in Qajar Iran

Nineteenth-century Iran produced a series of heterodox and mystical movements that standard political histories tend to skip, and Bayat treats them as the seedbed of later dissent rather than as curiosities. It is one of the clearer routes into the religious history that Iranian politics keeps drawing on without ever quite acknowledging that it does.
