Tariq Ramadan
Scholar of contemporary Islamic studies
Tariq Ramadan is a Swiss-born academic and philosopher who held the chair of contemporary Islamic studies at St Antony’s College, Oxford, and directed the Research Centre for Islamic Legislation and Ethics in Doha. He is the author of more than twenty books on Islamic thought and ethics.
His central scholarly argument is that Muslims in Europe and North America should read their tradition from within the societies they actually live in, rather than as a diaspora oriented elsewhere. He works through classical legal categories rather than around them, which is what gave the position its reach among European Muslim readers.
