Margaret Cho broke through in the 1990s and was handed a network sitcom, All-American Girl, that the network then spent a season trying to make her fit — including telling her to lose weight to play herself. It collapsed, and so did she, and the stand-up she built afterwards is where the real work is.
I’m the One That I Want is her account of that stretch, and it is unsparing about the industry and about her own part in what happened.
