Robert Rodriguez made El Mariachi for seven thousand dollars, partly funded by volunteering for medical research, and it won at Sundance. He has since worked as director, writer, editor, composer and cinematographer, often several at once, on the argument that constraint is a creative tool rather than an obstacle.
Rebel Without a Crew is the diary he kept through that first film, and it has launched more low-budget careers than most film schools.
