Ilan Pappé is an Israeli historian, one of the “New Historians” who reread Israel’s state archives in the 1980s and reached conclusions sharply at odds with the founding account. He now directs the European Centre for Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter, having left Haifa after his positions made his position there untenable.
The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine is his most consequential and most disputed book, arguing from military and government records that the 1948 depopulation was planned rather than incidental.
