Jane McGonigal designs games intended to solve real problems, and directed game research at the Institute for the Future. Reality Is Broken argues that games are not an escape from reality but a demonstration of what reality lacks: clear feedback, achievable challenge, and work that visibly matters.
Her later book Imaginable turns the same tools toward forecasting, teaching readers to rehearse futures they would otherwise be blindsided by. She wrote much of it before 2020 and had run a pandemic simulation a decade earlier, which gives the argument some weight.
